Never throw away good fudge....

OK, I may actually have to start participating in Works for Me Wednesday. I had an idea today that I think will make even Alton Brown proud. ;-)

A few weeks ago I made some cookies and fudge to send some Marines overseas. The fudge is an old recipe, handed down from my Nana. It's called "Fantasy Fudge", and we have made it before. I don't know where she got the recipe, but I am sure it was from a magazine. :-)

Anyway, it didn't set. I think it was because of the margarine. This is not the first time it didn't come out. So, I think from now on I will try using butter instead of margarine. I know that made a difference in Rice Crispy treats. Maybe it is because of the humidity. I don't know. All I know is it didn't get hard so that I could cut it.

Well, my Mom (in her infinite wisdom) wrapped it in foil and put it in the freezer. Her reasoning? YOU DON'T THROW AWAY GOOD FUDGE! You eat it with a spoon if you must, but you never throw it out. Smart woman. :-)

OK, so last night I remembered an episode of "Good Eats" where Alton Brown made Truffles. So, I thought, "I wonder what would happen if I took out the fudge and formed it into little balls and dipped it in almond bark?" You know what happens? You get these:

Yes Ma'am, those are Truffles!! :-) I had some coconut and some toasted slivered almonds in the freezer, so I pulled those out and rolled some truffles in them. Then I remembered that Alton also used cocoa powder, so I did that too. I had my Mom taste them, and she said they were really good. They aren't very pretty, but real Truffles aren't. They are, however, VERY RICH! :-) So, if I were to give these as a gift I might drop 3 or 4 in a small cellophane bag tied with a ribbon, and voila you have a gift. :-) Alton would be proud. :-) As for "Works for Me Wednesday", I'm going to go post it now. :-)

Love

Just one thing to say: YUM!!

Okay, two things: yes, using butter instead of margarine could make the difference.

I have done that. Sometimes the whatever it is stays in the freezer to be eaten hat way, other times I have rolled it in powdered sugar then dunked in melted chocolate and other times I did what you did. Either way it is still all good. :)

I had some fudge recently that didn't set either and I didn't know what was wrong! I googled some tips and the best response I got was "drizzle over the most expensive half gallon of ice cream your local grocery store sells"!

I love your idea and sitting here now I just thought of another way you could use it! Since most fudge contains cocoa powder it could be used to make chocolate milk or homemade hot cocoa.

P.S. I think Alton would be proud of you, too!

Heck, I think Alton would be jealous that he didn't think of it first. Sure wish I could taste it. But that would involve a long drive and a trip to the ER. :P

Alton may be proud, but mom would be devastated if she knew the batch of Nana's fudge I made- that didn't set either- never found it's way to a freezer. it found it's way to the garbage disposal!!!!

Ummm... you're right, Queen B. Mom wouldn't be proud, and I for one am not going to tell her. :-)
But, if it happens again just try this. They reall are good.

And, there are some other really great suggestions here. Thank you all. I will be trying some of these as well. :-)

These look yummy. I love those great ideas that take a cooking failure and turn them into a masterpiece. When I was first married, we had a dinner party where I made a peach cobbler that turned into peach goo (I had neglected to note that regular flour could not be substituted for "self-rising" in a recipe). I quickly raided the freezer and poured the goo over ice cream for dessert. Sometimes the best ideas come out of sheer desperation :) Thanks for the inspiration.
